As one year ends and a new one approaches, many people reflect on what is working and what’s not. If you feel like you end every year frustrated about your financial situation, it is time to take a new approach. Creating a budget – and sticking to it – can quickly transform your financial situation. If you are ready to make changes, keep reading for some household budgeting tips.

1. Get Organized
You cannot make an accurate budget without knowing who and what you owe. Take out your bills, open up your online accounts, and make a list of everything you owe and spend a month in and month out. This will create a foundation so you can work on your budget.

2. Prioritize Your Spending
Take a hard look at what you are spending your money on. Are you spending according to your priorities? List your spending based on your priorities so you always take care of the most important things first. For example, food, housing, utilities, and transportation should be at the top of your list.

3. Be Realistic with Your Spending Categories
It is easy to cut too deeply in some categories when you are trying to create a budget that works. You will not stick with your budget if you are unrealistic with your spending categories. Take a look at what you typically spend in a category to help you determine how much you can cut back.

4. Swap Name Brands for Generic items
A simple way to cut down your grocery budget is to swap name brands for generic items. Many of the big box stores offer generic brand items that are comparable to the name brand but for a lower price.

5. Shop the Sales
You can make your entire budget go further by shopping the sales. You can save on food, clothes, electronics, and other items by being intentional about purchasing items that are on sale.

6. Use a Cashback App When Shopping
There are a number of cashback apps that can help you stretch your budget. Ibotta, Fetch Rewards, and GetUpside is three examples of cashback apps that can save you money while shopping.

7. Eat at Home
Eating out can quickly eat up a large chunk of your budget. Make a point to eat at home and you will see the difference in your budget.

8. Set Up Auto Payments
Forgetting a payment can cost you money in late fees and penalties. You can eliminate your chances of forgetting about an important payment by setting up auto payments.

9. Cut Unnecessary Spending
It is easy to pile up expenses on things that you do not need or even want. Subscriptions, memberships, and other recurring payments that you never use can add up each month.

10. Make Saving a Priority
When you are focused on creating a budget you may be tempted to leave savings out of your plan completely. Don’t do that! Having savings will help create some stability in your finances by allowing you to take care of unexpected issues when they arise.

These household budgeting tips can help you get started on the process of getting your finances in order so you can handle emergencies when they come up and make progress toward your financial goals.
